What Is Botsy?

Botsy is a 2-axis CNC drawing machine, also known as a vertical pen plotter. It uses digital vector artwork to create an accurate drawing on a wall, stretched canvas, or other suitable vertical surface.

Instead of manually measuring, scaling, projecting, and tracing a large design, you can use Botsy to transfer the artwork directly to the surface.

You choose the artwork and the drawing tool. Botsy follows the digital design and creates the outline. You then use that outline for painting, coloring, cutting, or other creative work.

Botsy is one of several ways to transfer artwork to a large surface. Depending on the project, artists may choose Botsy instead of—or in combination with—methods such as projection and manual tracing.

How Botsy Started

Botsy began with a mural.

Liza Kholodkova, the founder of Botsy, has always had an interest in both painting and engineering. After earning degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Florida, she combined those two interests to develop a tool for a problem she had experienced herself.

While working on murals, Liza found that outlining a large design could take a significant amount of time. The creative part—designing and painting the mural—was enjoyable. Measuring, scaling, and transferring the outline was not.

She began looking for a better way to do that part of the job.

That idea became Botsy: a wall-drawing robot that could accurately transfer a digital design to a large surface while leaving the creative work in the hands of the artist.

What started as a solution to a mural-painting problem has grown into a tool for artists, makers, and DIY creators.
